The Town of Lunenburg is calling on residents to dispose of sanitary wipes properly in response to more of them turning up in their waste water treatment facility.
In a post on the town’s facebook page they shared an image of the damage wipes can cause to municipal water systems.
Mayor Rachel Bailey says amidst COVID-19 they can’t afford to have issues with water distribution “We’ve noticed this issue for years, but with the situation were currently in and with all the extra wipes we are really pleaing with the public not to flush them.”
She says that many wipes available market themselves as flushable but while they may leave your pipes just fine it’s downstream where issues arise “Once they are in our system they can cause blockages, maintanence and potentially catastrophic damage.”
To properly dispose of wipes it is reccomended that you put them out for collection on the appropriate solid waste collection day.
