Last week Nova Scotia lifted some public health restrictions on things like parks, trail and cottages.
During Tuesday’s COVID-19 update Premier Stephen McNeil said the motivation behind lifting the restrictions was to improve the mental health of Nova Scotians.
Last weekend much of the province was treated to a beautiful Sunday and the Premier saw many people enjoying the new rules.
“The images are what stuck with me the most, Nova Scotians out there with smiles on their faces, to be honest it made me feel great,” he said.
He says he was “beyond happy” to hear stories on the news about individuals who said getting outside was a huge boost for their mental health.
From staff reports and their own observations both the Premier and Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Robert Strang say that Nova Scotian appeared to enjoy their new freedom while observing physical distancing.
Golfers were also able to visit driving ranges again but courses remain closed. The Premier still wants them to be ready “Get your staff out there, get the courses ready so they are ready when we are.”
According to the RCMP Nova Scotians seem to have enjoyed the new opportunities in accordance with the law. Between May 1-5 they say nine people were charged with violations of the province’s Emergency Management Act and Health Protection Act. That is a very small increase from the week prior where they charged five people.
