Barb Woods couldn’t have predicted how a simple post on social media would take off as it has.
On Saturday she made a desperate post on Facebook looking for some new female friends and the response was immediate. By Monday a first group meeting had already been arranged.
“I couldn’t believe how many women reached out to me-it turns out there are a lot of people in the same boat,” she said.
Woods had moved inland from Mahone Bay in 2018 to share a home with her partner in Newburne, and found herself feeling very isolated and without a circle of friends.
“Last summer it was just so difficult for me to be there with no people around me, and this summer I decided I wasn’t going to go through that again. That’s why I put it on Facebook and hoped that people would react positively and boy did they ever,” she said.
Over 30 women have now joined the Newcomers to Lunenburg County group and on Tuesday afternoon the first meeting was held at a member’s home in Conquerall Bank.
“We had to keep to a ten-person maximum because that’s the rule in Nova Scotia right now, but hopefully things will open up further and we can have more people at meetings,” said Woods.
During the first meet the group took time to get to know one another sharing their stories of what brought them to Nova Scotia, because as it turns out most had come from away.
“It’s special, even people who have never lived here or been here are drawn here, it drew me and I had never been to Nova Scotia before. The water, the country, the people,” said Woods.
