Kids interested in the tech world can explore hands-on during a free tech camp next week.
The camp, for kids age 9-12, is run by Digital Nova Scotia in partnership with the Discovery Centre and the Lunenburg YMCA.
Digital Nova Scotia runs a digital discovery camp for kids every year. Usually it is held in person in Halifax and across the province with different community partners, but pandemic restrictions meant that this year it had to go virtual.
Project Manager for Digital Nova Scotia Hannah Edgar, says they were able to offer spots for 8 students to learn in-classroom and a further 7 spots for students to log in from home. This will be the second year the camp has been offered in Bridgewater.
The camp offers a broad overview of different test topics. Test kits are available for pick up from the YMCA and kids can work on them at home throughout the week with support from Discovery Centre counsellors.
Edgar says the camp is designed to get kids interested in the tech field which is a very fast-growing industry, and they will have the opportunity to connect with mentors from the tech industry.
“There are some really great tech companies right here in Lunenburg County. Kids are our future workforce, and I don’t think they realize the range of possibilities that exist for them in the tech sector,” she said.
“This is a great opportunity to get them hands on experience at this age, and show them that if this is something that interests them now, where they can take that interest and turn it into a career in Nova Scotia.”
The camp is free to campers age 9-12 and runs this week from July 21-24 (Tuesday to Friday.) All in-person spots are filled but there are still some spaces available for kids to participate from home.
