In recent years Mahone Bay has been incredibly supportive of the LGBTQ community according to LunenburgPride Director Shelley McCorriston.
Previously they had flown the Pride flag at their municipal offices but as it is a low traffic area they strived to improve their display of solidarity.
This year the flag will be flown at the bandstand which is located on Main Street in the heart of town.
McCorriston says this is just one example of how Mahone Bay is supporting the LGBTQ community, “They also suggested a Pride crosswalk and with the help of Dylan Hyde the CAO and his connections with the traffic department we were able to pull it together quickly.”
The Pride flag will be raised for the first time in its new location Wednesday, July 22 at 5:30 p.m. There is no official event this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic but McCorriston is looking forward to when that isn’t the case and they can fully celebrate the raising of the flag.
In McCoristons opinion, the Pride flag has the ability to send a powerful message to communities “The flag denotes that this is a safe community where people are all accepted and I think that is a message everyone should be able to get behind.”
The flag is expected to be flown for at least one week but possibly longer.
