The turnout over the weekend was impressive for what was a regatta put together quickly in response to the cancelation of most other sailing events as a result of COVID-19.
Over 30 boats competed in the Welcome Back Regatta which ran over the weekend. The regatta hosted multiple fleets including IOD, Sonar, J 105, and two PHRF fleets.
The largest fleet was the Sonars with 11 boats. Claiming the first place after seven races were Andreas Josenans and his crew. Their ship named “Ping” claimed first place in four of the eight races.
In the second-largest fleet, the PHRF B class “Etchell” a Can 63 owned by Robert Stevens out of Halifax claimed top honours.
You can find a full list of all race results here.
Although boats were allowed to enter from all over Atlantic Canada all of the boats registered are based out of Nova Scotia with the majority coming from either the South Shore or Halifax.
Special precautions had to be taken in order to comply with COVID-19, regulations like the use of masks, physical distancing, and other things that have become customary during the pandemic.
While the event was set up to fill the void left by the cancelation of the regatta there are thoughts that this may become an annual event but the LYC has not released any official plans to host the event again at this time.
