The Municipality of The District Of Lunenburg was one of many communities included in the latest round of Internet for Nova Scotia Initiative projects.
Bell Canada will be overseeing the installation of new internet infrastructure that will bolster connectivity around the district. They have established four zones where the work will be done; those being Lunenburg, Lunenburg North, Lunenburg Northwest and Mahone Bay. You can find more precise information on the projects on Develop Nova Scotias’ webpage.
MODL Mayor Carolyn Bolivar Getson says this is huge news for the community and something they’ve been working on for some time, “This will see 95 per cent of homes and businesses connected in our area and in today’s climate it’s more important than ever to have reliable and fast internet.”
The Mayor says they will not be stopping there and she would like to see 100 per cent connectivity but she thinks 98 to 99 per cent is what they will ultimately achieve.
“We’re (MODL) contributing $1.9 million and more millions are coming from the provincial government and private investment, without which this project wouldn’t have been possible.”
She also says the information on the Develop Nova Scotia webpage does not necessarily include all the areas that will receive upgrades and it is possible that your home may not appear on it but may still receive upgrades.
The agreement with Bell Canada will provide more than 100 communities across the province with high-speed internet, at speeds higher than Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission targets. With preparatory and engineering work already underway on the new projects, it is expected that more than 11,000 homes and businesses will have access by summer 2021, 21,000 by end of 2021, and all 32,000 by summer 2022.
