A small photo gallery in Lunenburg is home to Stephen Ernst who recently used his passion for local history and photography to create a book that tells the story of Lunenburg.
Lunenburg: A History in Pictures takes a look at the town as far back as the late 1800s up until contemporary times and it aims to show the history of the town through that period.
Early photos focus on the shipbuilding and fishing industries that were staples of the local economy back then.
It also highlights significant events in the town’s history like the royal visit from Prince Charles and Princess Dianna and the launching of both Bluenoses.
Ernst says it’s a project he’s been working on for some time and it required some outside help, “I’ve always had a passion for it, so I have a large personal collection where a lot of the photos came from but the rest were from the community and people I knew that had their own collections were keen to help when I asked.”
For the most part, Ernst believes the book does a good job providing a comprehensive glance at the history of the town, “Obviously were limited by the fact that photography only started in 1839 and Lunenburg was founded in 1753 but aside from that most major events are in the book.”
Anyone interested in picking up a copy can do so online and it can also be found at various stores around the South Shore.
