Last year when the MODL officially recognized the climate emergency they set up the Partners for Climate Protection (PCP) Program and they’ve just hit the program’s first milestone.
The first milestone was relatively simple but imperative towards future environmental planning as it required the MODL to complete a community and corporate greenhouse gas emissions inventory as well as a 10-year business as usual emissions forecast, which was completed in early September.
“We recognize that climate change is affecting our communities and the Municipality is taking a leadership role to address this crisis,” said Mayor Carolyn Bolivar-Getson.
With those things now complete the Municipality can now look towards making the changes that will actually reduce carbon outputs.
MODL will now move on to milestone two of the PCP program by setting an internal target for corporate GHG emissions reductions as well as working with members of the public to set a community GHG emissions reduction target. How emissions will actually be reduced is yet to be determined but it will likely see a switch away from fossil fuel-based energy towards renewable sources.
