The Deputy Premier of Nova Scotia announced on Thursday she will not be reoffering in the next provincial election.
Deputy Premier Karen Casey says she intends to complete the current term but she will not be running in her riding of Colchester North whenever an election is called.
Casey was first elected as an MLA in 2006, at that time she ran as a Progressive Conservative. During her time as a PC, she served as Minister of Education. Following that she was given the role of Minister of Health.
In 2010 Casey crossed the floor and joined Stephen McNeil who at the time led the third-placed Liberals.
Over her ten years as a Liberal, Casey has handled multiple portfolios considered to be among the most important.
She was named deputy premier in 2017 and is also the Minister of Finance and Treasury Board, as well as the chair of the Treasury and Policy Board. She has served previously in the education and health portfolios.
During remarks made after the announcement, Casey said she believed after giving 15 years of service to the government her time had come.
“I am proud to have been part of this government as we have seen our province reach milestones in population growth, immigration and employment,” said Casey. “It has also been both an honour and privilege to serve the people of Colchester North and all Nova Scotians. I appreciate all the positive working relationships I have developed with constituents over the past 15 years.”
Casey is currently unsure of what the future holds for her but she says she’s looking forward to spending more time with her four grandchildren.
