The Town of Lunenburg has appointed a new town crier who will also serve the surrounding communities.
Stephen Findlay has taken over the role that was previously held by John McGee for over a decade.
McGee recently retired from the role after revitalizing the role.
Findlay says he heard about the opportunity from Lunenburg Mayor Matt Risser who approached him because of his background in the performing arts.
Before moving to Nova Scotia, Findlay worked as an actor with various play companies, he also appeared in some commercials and film roles during his career.
“I’ve never been shy and I’ve always been told I have a great stage voice,” Findlay said. “I’m familiar with most of the basic history of the region but I know I’ll have to learn more as I go to various events.”
Findlay has agreed to a one-year term in the role with the expectation that he will stay on beyond that until he no longer wants the role.
It’s unlikely you will see him at events in the near future as the COVID-19 pandemic has stopped most large events a town crier would typically attend.
The town is also waiting on Findlay’s outfit to be completed as the old suit did not fit him.
Findlay says he is excited to have the role as he views town criers as “ambassadors” for the towns they serve and he wants to represent his well.
