Volunteer work has been particularly impactful during the past year and Queens County is recognizing two volunteers in particular for their work.
The two volunteers were originally recognized by the Ripple Effect program, which allows Queens residents to nominate individuals they deem worthy.
Kendra Shot of Hunts Point, and Ron Shupe of Liverpool, were selected from nine Ripple Effect Volunteer Initiative nominations (representing 12 individuals) received over the past year and named as the Regions Volunteers of the Year.
Shot has been a volunteer in Queens County for many years. She co-chaired Queens County Seafest in Brooklyn and Privateer Days in Liverpool for four years. Kendra also stepped up for the Music Weeks and Curling Club events that were held in Liverpool.
Shupe has been on the Board of Directors for Milton Community Association for over the past 15+ years and has served in many roles. He has been in charge of the bar services, stocks the alcohol, serves the customers and ensures that all rules of the liquor license are followed. Ron is also in charge of the Bingo program. Shupe sells the books of cards at the door, calls Bingo, and does the paper work for the lottery commission. Ron helps with the set-up of the hall at times and is also there for the clean-up.
Each year, Council chooses two Volunteers of the Year for the Region of Queens who will receive an award at the Provincial Volunteer Awards Ceremony held near Volunteer Week in April. The Provincial Volunteer Award is a once-in-a-lifetime award. , and the Province of Nova Scotia honours approximately 70 volunteers from across Nova Scotia each year for their commitment and dedication to community life.
“Our volunteers are one of our greatest assets in Queens County, and recognition of their work and how they contribute to life in Queens County is important,” said Darlene Norman, Mayor of the Region of Queens Municipality. “Congratulations and thank you to Kendra and Ron, and to all the nominees.”
Norman says she wishes they could recognize all of their volunteers at the provincial level but they are limited to two.
The awards ceremony will be held virtually this year on April 26, 2021, in Halifax.
