The South Shore Ice Sharks Bantam ‘AA’ hockey team went undefeated to capture the Moncton Challenge Cup.
Captain Rylan Mayo scored the winner 23 seconds into overtime as the Ice Sharks defeated the Dartmouth Whalers 3-2 in the final.
The 14 year-old from Wentzells Lake describes the winning goal.
“I saw Cameron pressuring the defence back at the blueline with the puck and coughed it up and I just picked it up on my stick, went in and shot it and hoped to heck it went in.”
Elek Martin of Lunenburg and Nolan O’Brien of Hebbville scored first period goals for South Shore before Dartmouth replied twice in the third to send the game to overtime.
Goaltender Rowan Frost of Mahone Bay says he’s glad the team pulled out the victory.
“It was kind of nerve-racking cause, you know, I let in the goals in the third but then we got the puck right off the draw and went down and scored. It was a pretty good moment.”
The Ice Sharks had four wins and a tie on route to the title.
