Corner stores are becoming more rare these days and it’s a shame.
As a kid I remember two corner stores – one was in my neighbourhood in Dartmouth on the way to school, and the other was in the sleepy village of Earltown.
But they both had one thing in common. Penny Candy!
Right there on the counter would be these little open containers of penny candy and you could pick and choose what you wanted for.. well, just pennies!
I think my favourite was those soft black licorice pipes.
When I became a tween it was the comic book display of all your favourite superheroes. And in summer a can of pop or a bag of chips or a popsicle.
Whatever the name of the store was on the sign, it usually was called by the last name of the people that owned it.
Did you grow up with a favourite corner store and what would you buy from them?
