After a two-year hiatus caused by the pandemic, a program that aims to help seniors navigate various issues is set to return.
The Senior Safety Academy is a program that offers six weeks of programming that focuses on specific issues seniors may face in today’s society.
The event is being put on by the Lunenburg County Seniors’ Safety Program in partnership with a new business called the Flourish Centre.
Chris Andrews with the Flourish Centre says the opportunity for them to partner with the program made sense for the business considering what they do, “We are a centre for people 55 plus for healthy activity, we’ve only been open a few months at this location and we’ve been looking for ways to help people discover us and utilize our facility,” she said.
Although the program runs over six weeks Andrews says participants can pick and chose which sessions to attend depending on what they want to learn.
This year’s programming will include sessions on legal matters, medication safety, fall prevention, scams and fraud, Life Account, elder abuse, Caregivers NS, Efficiency NS, technology, emergency preparedness, nutrition, and more.
Andrews expects the session on caregivers to be one of the most popular sessions as it will delve into the subject of non-paid support workers like family or friends and how to navigate those situations.
Registration is open now for anyone over the age of 55, it closes on September, 17 with the first session starting on September, 28. To sign up you can call the Flourish Centre at 902-527-7697; or the Lunenburg County Seniors’ Safety Program at 902-543-3567.
Andrews recommends signing up early as spots are limited and with the program being on hiatus for the past two years due to the pandemic she expects there to be lots of demand.
