Bridgewater’s Mayor is weighing in after the federal election saw the riding of South Shore-St. Margaret’s make the switch from red to blue.
Conservative Rick Perkins won the riding with 41.0 per cent of the vote over Incumbent Liberal Bernadette Jordan who received slightly less at 36.9 per cent.
Mayor David Mitchell said he’s not surprised that the results went down to the wire.
“Bernadette faced a lot of challenges in her ministerial portfolio and when the election was called, a lot of those challenges still remained, so it was going to come down to whether voters were willing to give her more time to address them or not,” said Mitchell. “Obviously they chose not to and that’s democracy. The people decided and they decided they wanted a change.”
He added that although Jordan wasn’t victorious, he wanted to thank her for what she has done in the community during her time as MP.
“Bernadette was instrumental in having the Cormorant removed, which we know was a challenge for decades,” explained Mitchell. “We’ve got exit 12A and now the 103 from Bridgewater to Halifax is considered a national trade corridor, which is something we worked on together.”
According to preliminary polling data from Elections Canada, voter turnout in the South Shore-St. Margaret’s riding was just over 60 per cent.
