Both of PVEC’s rugby teams were handed heavy losses in their regular-season openers on Tuesday with both the boys and girls teams falling to King’s Edgehill.
The boys were blanked 39-0, while the girls lost 32-10, however, Head Coach Andrew Dixon was very positive post-match. “This is the first time we’ve had a boys team in 7 years, so just for these guys to get out there was big for us today,”.
The last two years’ Rugby seasons were derailed by the pandemic which led to disruptions in player development. “Normally we get some kids in Grade 10 then after a year or two they know the game and can help the next generation coming through, today most of the players out there were playing their first game.”
Specifically, in the girls’ game, a marked improvement could be noticed as the game went on. PVEC conceded the first 32 points of the game, after that they managed to shut out KES for the remainder of the game and score the final two tries of the match.
PVEC’s tries were scored by grade 11 student Brianna Hamilton and grade 12 student Grayson Cudmore.

The season is still in it’s early stages and Coach Dixon would like to see more people join up, “All of these kids are coming from other sports, and I’ve always thought multi-sport athletes make the best rugby players so if their is anyone out there on the fence I’d encourage them to come and try it out at the very least,”.

The girls’ team is back in action next Tuesday as they travel to NKEC, then on Thursday both teams open their home seasons in Hebbville.
