Michelin Tire announced plans to expand its facilities in Bridgewater this week.
The French tire company says they are looking to build two new buildings that will add 34,400 square feet to their Bridgewater operations.
With the current facility coming in at nearly 1 million square feet, the expansion represents a relatively small 2 per cent increase to floor space.
While the increase in floor space is relatively small Bridgewater Mayor David Mitchell commented in an interview with CBC that the town views it as a further commitment to the community by Michelin.
In a release from Michelin, they said, “An addition to our Bridgewater plant will allow for the installation of new equipment used in the tire building process, ensuring we are well-positioned to meet future market needs,”.
It is estimated the expansion will add 10 to 15 jobs at Michelin Bridgewater, which currently employs around 1,000 people.
The announcement comes as work on a new $50 million exit is being built that will improve access to the Bridgewater plant, allowing trucks to take a more direct in and out of the facilities.
The expansion is still awaiting the full go-ahead, as it awaits May 4 which is the deadline for appeals submissions from the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board in relation to the development agreement between the town and Michelin.
