The Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for the Province of Nova Scotia is proposing changes to federal ridings which would include adding Shelburne to West Nova.
It would become the Acadian Shore-Shelburne riding, extending from part of Kings County to Shelburne County.
The changes are being made with consideration to Nova Scotia’s population, which is increasing in urban areas and decreasing rurally.
The proposed Acadian Shore-Shelburne riding would increase the population of the district by 2.08%.
The current West Nova MP Chris d’Entremont is sharing his thoughts on the proposal.
“The population growth in Nova Scotia happens in and around, for the most part, Halifax so there are adjustments that have to be made,” says d’Entremont. “Then what happens is it just sort of domino effects the rest of the province so what we’re seeing are a number of changes that look a little odd.”
He’s wondering how well the two areas will fit together.
“In our particular case its sort of the issue of South Shore versus the French Shore and how is that connection? Where is the line between those two? Ultimately it’s a proposal and its up to the community to come together and say ‘this makes sense’ or ‘it does not’.”
A public hearing about the proposal will take place in Yarmouth at the Rodd Grand Hotel on June 7th at 6:30 p.m.
