Fire departments in Queens County were sent rushing to the former Bowater Mersey mill in Brooklyn.
The fire call came in between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m.
Thick black smoke could be seen pouring out of the roof in pictures posted to social media.
Reports before 7 p.m. indicate the situation is under control and the black smoke could no longer be seen coming from the roof.
The mill was the main employer in Queens for decades but closed in 2012.
The Nova Scotia government later acquired the mill and most of its assets [along with land] from Resolute Forest Products.
No word on what caused the fire or the extent of damages.
