Sarah Mitton comes into the 2022 World Athletics Championships as one of the favorites to make the podium in women’s shotput, with gold being a very real possibility.
Mitton who hails from Brooklyn, Nova Scotia comes into the competition as she’s enjoying what has been her best season to date. Over the past year, she has claimed the Canadian indoor shotput record, the Canadian outdoor record (twice), and she recorded a personal best of 20.33 metres, the second furthest throw on record for this year in June.
Mitton is currently ranked third in the world for women’s shotput.
Mitton joins 14 other Canadians who are competing on the opening day of the 2022 World Athletics Championships, which are being hosted in Eugene, Oregon.
Women’s shotput is set to kick off the evening session in Oregon which starts at 9:05 p.m. EST.
Mitton has been placed in Group B, and she is scheduled to throw immediately after American Chase Ealey, who recorded the furthest throw in women’s competition this year, just a day after Mitton had claimed that record for herself.
A throw of 18.90 metres will be enough for automatic qualification into the finals.
The finals will take place Saturday, starting at 10:25 p.m. EST.
