I always find this time of year confusing. I want to get things into the garden and get things started, but it seems to be a bit of a gamble with some plants.
Some are hardy and don’t care if we get the odd cold night, maybe even a bit of frost. Others will simply keel over at the first sign of a chill. And at this time of year, you just never know what might happen.
I used to use the Victoria Day weekend as my start date. Some times it works, some times it doesn’t. It has not been unusual to get a little bit of frost up until the first part of June. But waiting too late seems to make the growing season pretty short in some cases.
There are those who say to wait until after the full moon in June. This year, that comes on the third. So it’s not a long way off. So maybe waiting until after that full moon might not be a bad idea.
Or maybe I’ll just roll the dice and see if I can get a few things in. Although there is a night or two next week that looks a bit iffy.
But this is what happens every year. I’m constantly second guessing myself as to when to get things in the ground. Or wait a bit too late and hope for things ripen before the frost hits again in September.
It always seems to be a guessing game.
